Red lipstick is like the stiletto heel of the make up. Every woman owns at least one tube of red lipstick in her make up bad. Red lipstick is like glamour in a tube. There’s just something about red lipstick that can make a woman feel sexy and classy at the same time. It has yet to go out of style. Celebrities such as Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera are known for their wearing of red lipstick. Women started wearing red lipstick more in the 1920’s with the flapper girls. In the 1930’s and 40’s red lipstick was more associated with the idea of adult sexuality and prostitution. It wasn’t until the 1950’s when the arrival of actresses Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor that red lipstick became sexy again. The one thing that is so appealing about red lipstick is that it so easy to wear and anyone can pull it off. The trick is to know what colours suit your hair and skin colour
How To Wear Red Lipstick
1. Find Your shade – The paler your skin is the more it will pop. Keep the eye make up light otherwise you will end up looking like a clown (Cameron Diaz made this make up faux pas at the 2007 Golden Globe Awards). If you have medium to dark skin then go for a deeper red with a brown or orange base. Dark skin often suits more pinkish reds
2. How To Do Your Other Make-up – The general rule of thumb when wearing red lipstick is to keep all your other make up quite simple as the red lips will already draw attention to your face. The classiest way to acheive this look is to apply a slick of black eyeliner near the lash line and apply two coats of mascara (or falsies) and ta da Hollywood glamour!
3. How To Apply It – To make it look smooth you need to exfoliate your lips first to get rid of all the dead skin first. Lipstick bleeds so to stop it from feathering you need to use a nude lip pencil to lock all the colour in. Personally I use a lip brush or sometimes my fingers to get the matte effect. I find glossy red lips a bit OTT but that’s just me. Just so the lipstick doesn’t look caked on and a bit thick, blotting between the layers helps make it looks more natural

As to whether you look good in red lipstick does always depend on what you are wearing as well. If the outfit you are wearing is already a ‘look at me’ outfit then maybe wearing red lipstick might overkill the outfit but wearing red lipstick with something as classic as a little black dress or even just a t-shirt and jeans and keeping everything else understated means you will look classy and sexy.
